Vice President of Business Development
Jim joined Matisse in February 2012, after providing consulting services to the firm since 2010. Over the previous 30 years, he owned a variety of businesses, including Ownco Marketing (sold to Boise Cascade in 1996), Brand Athletics (sold to Lids in 2010) and Sportech Inc. (sold to Fieldturf in 2010). Jim, who has a BA degree in political science from Oregon State University, has served on a variety of nonprofit boards, including those of Raphael House and Oswego Heritage Society. He has also been a trustee of Oregon State University.
In 1997 he helped start Deschutes Portfolio Strategies with Bryn Torkelson. Previously, Dan worked with Bryn at Dain Bosworth as a consultant to retirement plans and high-net-worth individuals. Before that, Dan was with Ragen Mackenzie and Shearson Lehman, both in Seattle. Dan has been in the investment business since 1982. He received his BS degree in finance from the University of Oregon.
Axel’s focus is on advising both corporate retirement plans and individual clients. His 30 years as a senior financial and operations executive, as well as a retirement plan trustee, for a variety of healthcare practice and service companies affords him unique perspective on the challenges faced by Plan fiduciaries. Throughout his career Axel also provided individual financial planning and guidance for both owners and employees.
Although Axel began his investment career as a trustee and CFO responsible for corporate and retirement assets, he officially joined the investment industry in 1993 at Kemper Securities. Shortly thereafter he co-founded Investment Management Consultants. In 1997 Axel took a leave from the investment industry to serve as CFO of an Internet healthcare company he co-founded (WellMed). When WellMed was acquired by WebMD in 2002, Axel returned full-time to the investment industry as a senior consultant for Heintzberger|Payne and coincidentally provided consulting support to Deschutes retirement plan clients during his tenure there. In 2015 Axel moved his practice to Deschutes.
Axel graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Reed College with a BA in mathematical economics in 1973. Axel is married with 4 grown children and 4 grandchildren. He enjoys listening to classical and jazz music and keeping up with current events and the financial markets, but mostly enjoys his kids and grandkids.
